Language in Morocco has been challenging to say the least. I knew going in to this Arabic would be hard, but I would have a great family to help at home. As it turns out our host Mom speaks French and Arabic- no English. Tomi and I have had to dig deep in to our memories for years of high school French, which is coming back surprisingly quick. When we study at night our house mom helps except she tells us the word in French. This results in double translation. First from Arabic to French then French to English. We are learning “Frarabic.” Thankfully we are picking up more and more Darija everyday. We can talk to her using both interchangeably. Our host mother is incredible and willing to help as much as she can. She promises we will be speaking Darija in 2 weeks. We’ll see.
